Chase Elliott spends most of his year trying to go faster than everyone else.
So when he finally gets a chance to slow down, you’ll probably find him with a fly rod, on a golf course, hiking somewhere in Colorado or strapped to a snowboard.

And according to the former NASCAR Cup Series champion, those escapes aren’t just a nice way to kill time between races. They’re almost a necessity.

NASCAR’s schedule is a grind. But Elliott says it’s not necessarily the number of races that wears on drivers — it’s how much of the calendar the season consumes.
“You tell people, ‘Oh, well how many races are in a year?’ And you say, ‘Well, there’s 38,’ and they’re like, ‘Oh wow, that’s a lot,’” Elliott told OutKick OutDoors. “But in my mind, it’s not. It’s not the 38 races that’s a lot. It’s the time span from February to November.”
That’s nearly the entire year spent traveling, preparing, racing and trying to keep pace in one of the most competitive garages in motorsports.
And Elliott believes drivers who don’t find some way to occasionally get away from it can pay the price.
“If you don’t have ways to escape and ways to reset and do the things that you need to do to show up with the right mindset, I think it has a high potential to really eat you up,” he said. “Especially when things aren’t going good.”

For Elliott, a lot of that reset happens outdoors.
He’s an avid fly fisherman, a hobby he picked up after growing up around his dad’s best friend and his uncle Ernie, who were both heavily into the sport.
And part of the appeal is that it’s really freaking hard.
Elliott has previously compared fly fishing to golf — another hobby he loves, despite admitting he’s still waiting for the part where he actually gets good at it.
The similarities, he explained, are everywhere.

Lay a fly down too aggressively and you can scare off the fish. Try to cast through the heavily wooded streams of North Georgia and there’s a decent chance you’ll spend part of your day retrieving hooks from trees. Even when everything goes right, you’re still chasing a level of mastery that may never actually come.
“It’s just the craft of being good at it, and kind of that never-ending journey and never-ending search of trying to master something that will never be mastered,” Elliott said. “And I think those two things fall in that category.”
Golf has presented a similar problem.
Elliott said he used to be more competitive about the game and still occasionally goes through stretches where he decides he’s finally going to figure it out.
Then reality intervenes.
“I’m very one-track-minded, I think, in a lot of ways,” he said.

To attack golf the way he’d need to in order to become genuinely good, Elliott believes he’d have to take time and attention away from other parts of his life — most notably his actual job.
So, for now, he’s content to remain hopelessly in pursuit.
“Hopefully there will be a day and a time that I can commit to things that I want to get better at or want to try and master,” he said.
His love of being outside goes well beyond fishing and golf, though.
Elliott spent a couple of years living in Colorado as a kid after his father, NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, stepped away from full-time racing. Looking back, he considers those years a gift.
“If you were bored, it was your own fault,” Elliott said.
While kids elsewhere might have spent afternoons parked in front of an Xbox or PlayStation, Elliott remembers his Colorado childhood differently.
“It was just all outside, all we could do,” he said.

Summers offered seemingly endless options. Winters meant snowboarding and skiing. And if riding the chairlift got boring, Elliott and his buddies would hike farther up the mountain in search of fresh tracks no one else wanted to work for.
He still tries to get back to Colorado when NASCAR’s schedule makes it possible, sometimes taking advantage of western race swings rather than flying all the way home to the East Coast just to turn around again.
Snowboarding remains one of his favorite ways to stay active, too — especially when getting to the good stuff requires hiking rather than simply hopping off a lift.
But no matter the activity, the purpose is largely the same.
For a driver whose professional life stretches from February through November, there has to be something beyond the next race.

That’s not to say Elliott checks out. Quite the opposite.
He said he feels a responsibility to his team to make sure he’s doing everything asked of him at the highest level, especially because he knows the people around him are doing the same.
But being completely consumed by racing isn’t necessarily the best way to accomplish that.

“I think for all of us, it’s important to break away when you can,” Elliott said. “And I think it’s good for the whole environment.”
