The Bunbury community is set for a week of reflection, recognition and resilience as NAIDOC Week returns for the 50th year.
Kicking off with a flag-raising ceremony at Bunbury’s Graham Bricknell Memorial Music Shell, the celebration includes events planned throughout the week.
Speaking at the ceremony, Michelle Munns said the NAIDOC journey began as a movement for recognition, justice and equal rights but has seen many changes.
“Over the past five decades it has grown into a powerful national celebration that honours the enduring strength, resilience and contribution of our people, while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead,” she said.

“This year’s theme, the next generation, strength, vision, and legacy reminds us that the achievements of today are built on the courage, determination and sacrifice of those who came before us.
“Young people are central to the future of Aboriginal Indigenous Australians — as future leaders, educators, artists, athletes and advocates — they will continue to shape communities with resilience, knowledge and pride.
“Their voices, ideas and leadership will ensure that culture remains strong, and that the legacy of previous generations continues to inspire as we change.”
Ms Munns said the gathered group recognised the journey towards justice and equality continues.
“Together we all have a responsibility to learn from the past, celebrate the truth and contribute to a future founded on respect, understanding and reconciliation,” she said.
“Today provides an opportunity for each of us to reflect on the rich cultural heritage of oldest continuing cultures in the world.
“Thank you all for joining us as we celebrate NAIDOC Week 2026.
“I hope you enjoy the week-long activities and take this opportunity to learn, reflect and celebrate the strength, vision and legacy of Aboriginals and Torres Straight Islanders.”
NAIDOC Week continues in Bunbury with a movie night at BREC on Tuesday at 5.30pm, NAIDOC Family Fun Day at Koolambidi Woola on Wednesday from 11am, the South West Aboriginal Medical Service family fun day at the Bunbury Trotting Club on Friday from 10am to 2pm and more.
