Why Bitcoin could smash through $90K sooner than the market expects

Bitcoin coin stands in front of a cryptocurrency trading chart showing rising BTC price action and market volume.

Bitcoin climbed back towards $86,000 on Friday, putting the cryptocurrency within striking distance of the resistance zone that has repeatedly capped its recovery.

BTC traded around $85,969 after reaching an intraday high of $86,794, helped by easing US Treasury yields and more than $200 million of short liquidations over 24 hours.

The immediate test sits around $87,000 to $88,000, with $90,000 increasingly visible beyond it.

Positioning remains cautious enough that a clean breakout could force traders to chase the move, adding fuel as resistance thins.

Bitcoin is running out of resistance before $90,000

The analysts noted that Bitcoin was testing a $86,200 to $88,000 supply zone on Friday after reclaiming $85,000.

Nansen senior research analyst Nicolai Sondergaard has identified $87,000 as the next key level after $85,000, with $90,000 becoming the psychological target if that barrier breaks.

Bitfinex’s framework is more specific. Its analysts identify Bitcoin’s $87,722 yearly open as the major upside test.

A sustained break above that level, accompanied by stronger ETF inflows, would open a path towards its mean-MVRV level near $96,700.

None of those levels guarantees a rally, but they show why the next few thousand dollars matter.

Positioning could make the next move accelerate

“The important distinction is that price has turned bullish faster than positioning has,” Sondergaard told Crypto.news. Nansen found that some of Hyperliquid’s largest Bitcoin traders remained net short even after the earlier recovery above $85,000.

That creates a feedback loop.

If Bitcoin breaks resistance, shorts may cover while traders who stayed underweight chase the advance. Their buying can push prices higher, forcing additional bearish positions to close.

Friday offered a smaller version of that mechanism. More than $200 million of short positions were liquidated over 24 hours as BTC pushed towards $86,000.

Bitfinex analysts have also described Bitcoin’s resilience against high real yields and tighter financial conditions as evidence of an “asymmetric bid”.

They said leverage accumulated during the September breakout had largely been cleared and perpetual positioning was close to neutral.

That leaves Bitcoin less dependent on a crowded leveraged-long trade, while still giving remaining shorts room to become involuntary buyers.

ETF buyers still have to finish the job

The caveat is that squeezes are excellent accelerators but poor foundations. US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $3.1 billion across nine consecutive sessions, one of their strongest runs this year.

That streak ended on Wednesday with $148.7 million of net outflows, led by Fidelity, while BlackRock also recorded withdrawals.

The latest rally therefore needs spot demand to return if it is to become durable rather than another derivatives-driven burst.

Bitfinex has made that distinction explicit. Its analysts argue that spot demand, rather than broader financial conditions, will determine how the current range resolves.

A sustained break above $87,722 alongside accelerating ETF inflows would strengthen the upside case, while weakening flows would make the move vulnerable to reversal.
