The Eagles owe it to Jalen Hurts to address these serious allegations

The Philadelphia Eagles’ front office ought to address the Jalen Hurts situation publicly, preferably at a press conference.

The leaks, PR-approved statements, and secondhand medical analysis aren’t helping. If anything, each new development raises further questions about whether medical malpractice occurred.

Here’s what we know.

Hurts was reportedly cleated in his left calf against the Rams on October 4. He first sought treatment on October 8. An ultrasound in London on October 10 revealed a superficial blood clot. Doctors cleared him to play against Jacksonville in London on October 11. Hurts then participated fully in practice on October 14, preparing for the Eagles’ game against the Panthers on Sunday.

That evening, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the blood clot.

On October 15, the Eagles released a statement announcing that Hurts would miss the Panthers game while doctors determined the appropriate course of treatment. The team emphasized that his health and safety were its highest priority but provided no timetable for his return.

On Saturday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Eagles did not plan to place Hurts on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least four games. The reporting suggested that Philadelphia believed Hurts could return to the field within a month.

Later that day, Schefter reported that the Eagles had reversed course and placed Hurts on injured reserve.

JALEN HURTS TO REPORTEDLY MISS REMAINDER OF NFL SEASON AFTER BLOOD CLOTS FOUND IN QUARTERBACK’S LUNGS

Later that day, Schefter reported that the Eagles had reversed course and placed Hurts on injured reserve.

On Monday, The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reported that Hurts was expected to miss the remainder of the season after further medical evaluations revealed a more serious condition.

In a joint statement, the Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, confirmed that he had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning blood clots in both lungs.

“Hurts is now on blood thinners and should have no long-term effects,” according to the medical prognosis outlined in the statement.

In a follow-up report, Pelissero said doctors instructed Hurts not to sleep after discovering the blood clot in London as a precaution. According to the report, Hurts had been awake for roughly 36 hours when he started against the Jaguars.

Hours later, amid growing scrutiny from members of the media, Lynn offered a “clarification.”

Lynn told Pelissero, “Hurts was up until early Sunday morning getting evaluated at a hospital, he was able to sleep upon rejoining the team and the Eagles set aside a room for him at the stadium.”

John Clark offered a different timeline, reporting Monday that blood clots were discovered in Hurts’ lungs on Friday, a day before ESPN reported that the Eagles had no plans to place him on injured reserve.

So, what are we to make of all this?

At this point, it’s difficult to say. The reporting is conflicting, the timeline keeps changing, and each attempt at clarification seems to introduce another layer of uncertainty.

Only a small number of people know precisely what happened, including when doctors discovered the clots and whether the Eagles allowed Hurts to play in London after going 36 hours without sleep.

Unfortunately, the lack of clarity has made the public discourse worse.

Former NFL player Michael Robinson suggested that Hurts was faking the blood clot to avoid playing for a losing team. Meanwhile, doctors analyzing the situation from afar have debated on social media how Hurts’ condition should have been treated, often disagreeing with one another.

The Eagles owe it to Hurts, their fans, and the integrity of the organization to address these questions directly, in front of reporters.

The handling of Hurts’ condition is a serious matter. The reports have raised legitimate questions about whether medical malpractice occurred and whether the Eagles prioritized winning a regular-season game over the health of their franchise quarterback.

Those are serious allegations, not established facts. If the Eagles followed appropriate medical protocols and did not expose Hurts to unnecessary risks, they should explain the decisions that led to his clearance and provide the public with a coherent timeline.

Doing so would not require disclosing every detail of Hurts’ private medical history. It would require accountability and a willingness to answer difficult questions.

At this juncture, one thing is clear: the leaks, conflicting reports, and carefully crafted statements have done little to resolve the uncertainty. It has only fueled speculation.

That doesn’t help Hurts. It doesn’t help the Eagles. And it certainly doesn’t help the public understand what actually happened.
