Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter turns $427 NCAA suspension into powerful cancer research fundraiser

Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter walked out of the tunnel as the Vols’ sole captain during their home opener this past weekend, even though he was not suited up for the game.

Amid the controversial decisions surrounding former professional athletes returning to college athletics, Carter accepted his punishment when he could have easily sought help from a local judge to create a path back onto the field.

Following the 2025 season, the Vols linebacker decided to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft and leave Tennessee to pursue his professional dreams.

Unfortunately, Carter found out he was dealing with a foot injury that would require him to have surgery and miss out on preparations for the upcoming draft. So, he made the decision to return to college.

There were a few complications. Carter accepted $427 from an agent to cover a flight to a workout, and he knew his return to Tennessee could lead to an NCAA suspension.

The NCAA’s punishment came in the form of a one-game suspension that was initially set to keep the star linebacker out for the opening three games of the season.

With all of the chaos surrounding college athletics — from state courtrooms to federal court — Carter handled the situation with the utmost respect.

Arion’s girlfriend is currently in the middle of her own battle with cancer.

To show his support, Carter recently shaved his head for the woman he loves. Mariah Bryant was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer earlier this year. She lives in the Nashville area, where she works as an ICU nurse at a local hospital.

But now, he’s also raising money for cancer research with his play on the field. First reported by Austin Price of VolQuest, Arion Carter will donate $427 for each tackle that he makes this season to Nashville area charities that support women struggling to pay bills during their battles with cancer.

He is turning the $427 plane ticket reimbursement into something positive for the community, further demonstrating the character of a young man who has handled this entire ordeal with tremendous class.

Wearing a “Team Jesus” shirt on Monday, Carter explained how he is turning a negative situation into a positive one.

“It also goes back to my mom. She has always wanted a create a foundation, a non-profit for women and little girls,” Carter reflected on Monday. “With my girlfriend, going what she’s went though over these last few months, and me seeing it firsthand, it just really touched my heart and made me have a different perspective.

“I wanted to raise awareness and set up a foundation for cancer research and be able to do this. So, that was the origin of that.”

The character of Arion Carter shines during this moment

In addition to the first amount, Carter will donate $500 for each sack recorded this season, along with $1,000 for every interception or forced fumble. If he ends up scoring a touchdown while on defense, he will donate $5,000 for cancer research.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS’ LATEST MESS: COURT ORDERS SAY PRO ATHLETES CAN PLAY, BUT SEC AND BIG TEN READY TO FIGHT

“I think it’s indicative of who he is, right? He’s passionate about a cause for multiple reasons – obviously for his girlfriend and his family history, as well,” Tennessee’s Josh Heupel said Monday. “He’s a guy that cares about community, so it’s indicative of who he is as a person.”

Although Carter repaid the $427 plane ticket, he was punished for declaring his intentions to enter the NFL Draft. While the rule may make sense on paper, the NCAA could have used this entire situation as a positive public-relations opportunity.

“I feel like some things you can’t control,” Carter said. “I feel like you have to take everything with a grain of salt, not be too bitter about certain situations because there are rules at the end of the day. Even if the rules may not seem they are fair in a sense, I can’t control them.

“This is another way for me to turn a negative into a positive and get the season started in a great way.”

Now, the Tennessee linebacker is writing his own story on how this all played-out, with the Vols set to battle Georgia Tech this weekend in Atlanta in primetime.
