Fremantle stars Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss set to become first Dockers since Matthew Pavlich to kick 50 goals

Fremantle are on the verge of even more club history this weekend with star forwards Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss set to reach a milestone the Dockers haven’t seen since the iconic Matthew Pavlich was dominating as a key forward.

Treacy and Amiss have both kicked 48 goals and will enter Saturday’s clash against Melbourne at the MCG with the opportunity to become the first Dockers since Pavlich in 2012 to boot 50 majors in a season.

Plenty of Fremantle stars have tried to match Pavlich’s exploits both late in his career and after his retirement. But none have been able to reach the half century. The Dockers have the longest current streak of any club to not have a player to reach 50 goals.

Only Pavlich, Tony Modra, Jeff Farmer, Clive Waterhouse and Paul Medhurst have kicked 50 goals in a season throughout Fremantle history. But Treacy said that will be the last thing on his mind when he confronts the Demons.

“The goal kicking numbers are something that’s irrelevant for me,” Treacy said.

“I could have the best game of my life and not kick a goal. I feel like goals are an added bonus for my game and the way I play. I feel like the way we play as a forward line, we’re not reliant on one or two guys to kick all of our goals.

“We celebrate and have so much care for the way we score together. Clearly it is a good individual milestone. But I don’t think that’s the way any of us are looking to play. We don’t really achieve anything out of that.”

While Treacy and Amiss are within striking distance, Pat Voss has the best recent record of Fremantle’s key forwards at the MCG. He kicked five goals against Essendon earlier this year after producing a bag of six majors against Collingwood last season.

He is currently sitting on 35 goals, prompting Treacy to ponder whether all three could finish the year with the half century.

Treacy paid tribute to assistant coach Jaymie Graham for the way he had developed the forward line. Such is the respect he holds throughout the AFL, Graham is being interviewed for the vacant head coaching positions at both Essendon and Carlton.

Treacy said he’d been a brilliant coach for the forward line.

“He’s been phenomenal for my career and my development. Not only as a coach but as a person to have in my corner and a friend,” Treacy said.
