Anthropic files for IPO, touting AI’s ability to “improve how humans live”

Anthropic filed for an initial public offering on Monday, bringing the maker of artificial intelligence platform Claude a step closer to its highly anticipated public market debut and providing a key test for the rapidly emerging AI sector.

In the filing, Anthropic outlined its vision for a future profoundly shaped by AI, touting the technology’s potential to transform the global economy and improve lives worldwide.

“We believe the diffusion of AI through the global economy represents one of the largest opportunities in history to improve how humans live and work, and it is just beginning,” the company said in its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing highlights Anthropic’s rapid growth, with the company generating $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion in the same period last year. That staggering rate of expansion is likely to slow, with Anthropic noting that its revenue growth is expected to decline over time.

The company has yet to turn a profit. Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion for the first half of the year, more than six times the net loss of nearly $13 billion for the first two quarters in 2025.

Anthropic’s founders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, pitched the IPO to investors in part as an opportunity to be part of a history-defining moment.

“We encourage you, as a prospective owner of our stock, not to think of your purchase in purely transactional terms,” the company’s seven co-founders said in a letter included in the S-1. “We hope you will see it instead as an opportunity to be part of something greater. The advent of machine intelligence is one of the seminal moments in human history.”

Referendum on AI

The IPO, which market analysts expect as early as November, could instantly rank Anthropic among the world’s largest publicly traded companies. The offering could raise as much as $100 billion, according to reports. That would slingshot it past Elon Musk-owned SpaceX, which raised a record-breaking $86 billion when it went public in June.

Anthropic, which was valued at $965 billion in May, could see its value rise to $1.5 trillion or possibly $2 trillion, although its final valuation has not been established.

Anthropic shares will list on the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index, according to the company’s filing. The AI company will trade under the ticker symbol “ANT.”

More broadly, the transaction will gauge the strength of investor demand not only for Anthropic shares, but also for the widening constellation of data center builders, chipmakers and other companies involved in developing the critical infrastructure powering AI services.

“This IPO is a referendum on the entire AI trade,” Nigel Green, CEO of investment firm deVere Group, said in an email. “If it soars, expect a queue of AI listings and even more capital piling into the theme. If it stumbles, valuations across tech could reset fast.”

The torrent of capital flowing into AI has helped propel the stock market to record highs. The question is whether AI can maintain its momentum amid signs that investors are fretting over when — and if — their money will eventually pay off and deliver the returns they are banking on.

Anthropic’s prospectus shows that the company has funneled massive amounts of money toward building the computing resources necessary to power its AI models. The company spent $8.9 billion in the first half of the year on chips and other infrastructure to run its platform, compared to $2.3 billion over the same period last year.

“Anthropic could become the most valuable company in the world. It could also end up in bankruptcy,” analysts with Lightshed, an investment advisory firm, said in a research note ahead of the IPO filing.

Potential obstacles to growth

Anthropic’s IPO filing also outlines various risks that could hamper its growth or cause it to fall behind competitors. Much of the company’s future growth hinges on whether it has access to sufficient capital, including debt financing, which more companies are using to finance the AI buildout.

To maintain its competitive edge, Anthropic also said it will need to use its existing AI models to design and train next-generation platforms, a process known as “recursive self-improvement,” or RSI.

“If we fail to direct sufficient compute and research efforts to AI-assisted development, or if our competitors more effectively leverage AI to enhance their own innovation cycles, we risk falling progressively further behind. …” Anthropic said in the filing.

AI experts warn that using AI to build ever more powerful frontier models raises the risk of people losing control of the technology, potentially leading to disasters such as deadly pandemics or cyberattacks that cut off internet, electricity or water.

Barreling ahead despite safety concerns

Anthropic filed a confidential IPO with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, beating out rival OpenAI, which filed just over a week later. Both companies are barreling ahead with plans to go public despite concerns about the potential threats AI poses to humanity.

Reports of AI agents going rogue continue to pile up, stoking concern that the technology could escape human control and carry out cyberattacks. In September, Amodei called for a slowdown in AI development after one of his company’s former researchers said that there’s a 10% chance the technology could wipe out humanity in the next decade.

In an interview with CBS News, Amodei said the pace of technological growth should serve as a warning sign, while making a case for continued development of AI.
