Rising stars look to step into Commonwealth Games spotlight as we look at the West Aussies who could steal the headlines on day two in Glasgow.
SWIMMING
Iona Anderson: Women’s 100m backstroke heats – 5:30-8pm
The rising star will hope to make amends after a disappointing 200m final where she faded late to fall out of contention.
Still, she remains one of the favourites for gold as she looks to stake her claim as the next big thing following Kaylee McKeown’s withdrawal from the Games.
Inez Miller: Women’s 200m Freestyle heats – 5:30-8pm
The 19-year-old will take her first dip in the Glasgow pool after securing her spot at the Games with a WA record to finish third at Australia’s trials.
Having spent the past year in the US honing her craft, making the final will be a huge step, but Mollie O’Callaghan and Lani Pallister will likely keep her from higher honours.
BOXING
Lekeisha Pergoliti – 70kg light middleweight – 6-11pm
The Bunbury bruiser will hope to get her campaign off to a winning start as she looks to continue her strong form over the past year.
She is Australia’s No.1 fighter in her division and had a perfect 4-0 at trials as she looks to add to a Commonwealth medal to her World Championship success.
NETBALL
Courney Bruce & Sophie Garbin – Australia v Tonga 6-7:30pm
The Diamonds will get their campaign underway against minnows Tonga as they hope to lay down an early marker as they look to defend their 2022 title.
There’s extra motivation for Bruce in what will be the final games of her remarkable career.
“I am not doing another cycle, and I am very content with that. To go to one is incredible, so to be able to have the opportunity to go to three is extremely special,” she told The West Australian.
Garbin will be making her debut but has already tasted success at the 2023 World Cup and is coming off a strong domestic season with the Vixens.
