Two people, including a child, were killed and multiple others were injured after a vehicle plowed through a soccer game in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday afternoon, the authorities said.
Emergency officials began to receive multiple 911 calls at around 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, reporting that a truck had driven through a field where a soccer game was taking place at the Stryker Soccer Complex, said Capt. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department.
A child and an adult were killed, officials said. Multiple people were taken to area hospitals, and their condition was unknown.
The driver was taken into custody, Captain Moses said, adding that there were two juveniles in the truck. Officials were still trying to piece together what happened, he said. It was unclear how fast the vehicle was going or how it went past the complex’s gate.
People were struck on a field where teams from the Sporting Wichita Academy, a soccer club league for all ages, were playing. The league did not immediately return a request for comment.
“Soccer is more than a game. It is a community. It is families in the stands, teammates standing beside one another, and people who come together through a shared love of the game,” said a statement on the league’s page on social media. “Today, that community is hurting.”
